This is my fourth time to watch the World Cup in Japan. The first time was in 1998 and I had just had my first child. I think I watched almost every game that summer as I changed nappies and breastfed my baby. Of course I was supporting England more than Japan but I did like a few of the Japanese players, especially 'Gon' Nakayama and Kazu.

Four years later, and the tournament came to Japan and Korea. There weren't any official games in Kumamoto but I did get to see a practice game between Belgium and Colombia. In the summer of 2002 I was heavily pregnant with my second child, and again watched as many matches as I could while I stayed home trying to keep cool. For once I didn't have to worry about the time difference. Japan played better than before and I became a fan of Hidetoshi Nakata. It was so refreshing to hear him being interviewed as he answered the questions intelligently and showed a real individual streak.

In 2006 the World Cup was held in Germany, which meant lots of late games Japan time. I was lucky enough to discover a bar in Kumamoto which showed the matches live and enjoyed them in the company of other England fans. I remember going downtown proudly in my England shirt only to be heartbroken when my team lost to Portugal in a nailbiting penalty shoot-out. I cried all the way home that night and vowed I wouldn't get so emotionally involved next time.

Four years later, I am trying not to build up my hopes that England can finally repeat their World Cup win of 1966. Seeing the tournament open on African soil for the first time, in a country which saw so much violence and bloodshed, is truly insprirational and it promised to be a wonderful tournament whichever country wins. Now my children are old enough to be interested to, and to be split over which country to support. My daughter decided that she will support Japan and England equally, but my son announced that he will decide later which one has the best chance of winning. I guess he'll be supprting Brazil or Argentina then...

今回のワールドカップは日本に来て4度目となります。
最初は1998年でした。最初の子供を授かり、その子の世話をしながら殆どの試合を見た記憶があります。もちろん日本代表よりもイングランド代表に声援を送りましたが、日本代表の中にもお気に入りの選手がいました。特に、ゴン中山選手とカズ選手がお気に入りでした。

4年後の大会は日韓で開催されました。
熊本では公式戦はありませんでしたが、ベルギーとコロンビアの練習試合を実際に観戦しました。2002年の夏、私は二番目の子を妊娠した時、ひどい症状だったので殆どを自宅で過ごし、たくさん試合を観戦した記憶があります。時差が無かったのも良い事でした。日本代表は前回よりも善戦し、私は中田英寿のファンになりました。彼のインタヴューでは知的な回答をしていたし、すごく個性的な面が垣間見れて元気を貰いました。

2006年ドイツ大会は、日本では多くが夜の遅い時間の開催でした。
私は幸運にも熊本市内に試合をライブ中継してくれるバーを見つけ、他のイングランドファンと観戦しました。今でも覚えていますが、胸を張りイングランドシャツを着て繁華街へ行ったのはよいものの、ペナルティー合戦でポルトガルに破れ、胸が張り裂けそうになりました。あの晩の帰り道は涙が止まりませんでした。そして次回は感情的になるのは止そうと誓いました。

4年後の今年。
今回私は1966年のイングランド優勝の再現とかの希望はあまり持たないようにします。それよりも暴力と流血が繰り返し行われてきた南アフリカという国で開催される事、それは最初のアフリカの地での開催も意味する事、これらの事はすごく刺激的ですし、どの国が優勝しようとも素晴らしいイベントになるのは間違いないでしょう。私の子供達もワールドカップに興味を持つ年齢になり、どの国を応援するか自分で決められるようになりました。娘は日本とイングランドを公平に応援するそうです。しかし、息子は一番優勝の可能性が高い国を応援するとの事。そうすると、ブラジルかアルゼンチンでしょうか。  

Twice a week I teach a class of bilingual students including my daughter. They all attended an English-speaking kindergarten for three or four years and now go to regular Japanese school, so the class is one of the only times they get to use English. We read English story books, chat about what's been happening at home and school, play board games and and sometimes do art or writing activities. For my daughter the class is also a chance to meet her oldest and best friend from kindergarten days. Sometimes it can be stressful teaching my own child, but I'm really grateful that she can maintain this special friendship and it's wonderful to watch children I have known since they were two years old growing up.

週2回、私の娘も参加するバイリンガル向けのクラスを教えています。
このクラスに通う生徒は皆、インターナショナル幼稚園出身者で3～4年間の園生活を英語のみの環境で過ごし、今は通常の小学校に通っています。ですのでこのクラスは生徒同士で英語でお喋りできる貴重な時間になります。
クラスでは英語の物語を読んだり、おうちや学校で起こった事をおしゃべりしたり、ボードゲームで遊んだり、たまにお絵かきしたりします。

娘にとってこのクラスは、今となっては別々の小学校に通う幼稚園時代からの仲良しと一緒になれる貴重な機会です。
自分の娘をクラスで教えるのは難しい面もありますが、娘が幼友達とずっと仲良しでいてくれる事はすごくありがたいと思いますし、２歳から知っていて年を追うごとに成長していく子供たちの姿を見届けられるのはすごくワクワクさせられます。  

I have been playing 'Who wants to be a millionaire?' in my university classes recently. Almost everyone is familiar with the Japanese version of the show starring Mino Monta, but they don't always realise that the show, the music and the catchphrase 'Final Answer?' originated in the UK more than 10 years ago. I have always been a big fan of general knowledge quizzes so I tried to apply to go on the show but the phone lines were jammed as thousands of people wanted their chance to win a million pounds.
I really enjoy my role as quiz host (even though the audience is only 30-40 students). Just like the real show, the teams have three lifelines - ask the audience, fifty-fifty and phone a friend. In one class last week a student actually did phone a friend to get the answer to the question 'What was Shakespeare's first name?' Fortunately his sister knew the answer and helped his team win the game, but she must have been very surprised to receive a phone call in English from her brother without any explanation of why he was calling. To make the quiz more educational (and fun) I offered bonus points if the teams asked me a question about Japan. They could win extra points if I got the question wrong. I didn't do too badly, having memorised the names of the first and second Prime Ministers of Japan, smallest prefecture, longest river, last shogun etc. When I didn't know the answer I used a few psychological tricks to guess the answer from their body language, voice etc, and when I had no idea I always picked B. Now my students think I'm really smart!

私が教える大学のクラスではここ最近、「クイズ・ミリオネア」を教材に使っています。
これは、日本でも、みのもんたさんの司会でお馴染みですね。しかし、「ファイナルアンサー？」のキャッチフレーズで知られるこの番組は元々イギリスで10年以上前から放送されているものなのです。私はクイズの中でも特に「一般教養問題」が大好きなので、番組の出場権を賭けて電話クイズに挑戦した事があります。しかし、億万長者を夢見て何万もの人々が電話を掛けたので生憎電話回線が繋がらず悔しい思いをした事があります。

クラスではクイズ司会者の役割を大変気に入っています。（オーディエンスは30～40人の生徒なのですが・・・。）番組と同じように、チームには予め３つのライフラインがあります。「オーディエンス」「５０・５０（フィフティー・フィフティー）」「電話」です。先週のあるクラスでは、なんと生徒が本当に「電話」をクラスで「シェークスピアのファーストネームは何？」のクイズをしている最中に実行したのです！幸運にも生徒のお姉さんはこのクイズの答えを知っていたので、生徒のチームの勝利に貢献したのですが、お姉さんは弟がいきなり英語で奇妙な事を聞いてきたのでさぞかし混乱した事でしょう！

クイズでより教養が付くようにと生徒が私に日本についてのクイズを逆に出題したらボーナスポイントが付くようにしました。さらに、私の答えが誤りだったら特別ポイントも！
「初代と２代目内閣総理大臣」「面積が最小の県」「最長の川」「江戸幕府最後の将軍」等々。
これらの質問に対する答えを私は予め知識として憶えておりましたので割りと健闘しました。全く検討も付かないクイズだった場合、私はクイズを出す相手の動作、声の微妙な違いを読む心理作戦を決行しました。それでも答えが分からない場合はただ単にＢを選択しました。この作戦が功を奏し、かなりの確率で正解を当てる事ができたので今では生徒は私の事をすごくスマートだと思っているようです。  

I decided to take a break from using the text book in my high school and adults' class this evening and instead did some fortune telling! We have been practising using the future tense 'will' to make predictions so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to bring out a pack of cards and use them to tell students who they will marry, how many children they'll have, which man will be the most romantic, the richest etc. Of course, it's not serious, just a card game I used to play with my friends during lunch break at school, but we had a lot of fun with it and I have a feeling all the students will be playing the same game with their friends tomorrow.

今夜の高校生と大人のレッスンはテキスト使用を取り止め、運勢占いをしました。
未来形willの使い方をちょうどこの頃練習していたので、これを良い機会にトランプを使って生徒
さんらを占いました。

生徒さんが将来誰と結婚するか、子供を何人授かるか、どの男性生徒さんが一番ロマンチスト
や裕福になるか...etc

これは私が子供の頃に学校でよく昼休みに友達と遊んでいたゲームで全く当てにならない、
子供騙しレベルなのですが、それでも明日きっと友達とこのゲームを学校や職場でやっている
じゃないかなと私に思わせるくらい皆楽しんでくれていたようでした。
